As part of long-term aspirations to electrify its transportation network, e-commerce giant Amazon (AMZN.O) said on Tuesday that it will deploy its first European vans from American electric vehicle (EV) company Rivian (RIVEN.O) in Germany over the coming weeks.
As part of a 100,000-vehicle contract it placed with Rivian in 2019, of which it is the largest stakeholder, Amazon said 300 electric vans will start driving in the Munich, Berlin, and Dusseldorf regions.
To better fit European city streets, Rivian and Amazon will employ a van that is shorter and thinner than its American equivalent.
Electrifying its fleet in Europe will cost Amazon more than 1 billion euros ($1.1 billion), with 400 million euros going to Germany.
The online store started deploying Rivian vans in the US last year, and as of right now, it has more than 3,000 vans that carry items in more than 500 American cities and regions. By 2030, it wants to have 100,000 Rivian vehicles in its fleet worldwide.
